"Oh, My Dear Little One," by Marina Tsvetaeva & Polina Agureeva. A new translation by Glen Worthey.
Marina Tsvetaeva wrote this poem in 1919 and included it in her cycle "Poems for Little Sonya." Nearly a century later, Polina Agureeva composed music for the poem, and performed it in the 2004 film "Long Farewell," directed by Sergei Ursuliak. This clip is subtitled with a new translation of the poem by Glen Layne-Worthey. Text in translation: Snow-white lily of the valley, Crimson rose of spring. All who saw her told her softly: “Oh, my dear little thing!" Face — a Perfect little icon, Song — a songbird singing… On his knee he’s gently rocking Her — that sweet little thing. She walks right and she walks left, a Heav’nly pendulum. This refrain would always follow: “Oh, my dear little thing!” Heavеn’s plans cannot be altered, And the path is paved. Little things cannot be grown-ups, Nor the free enslaved. Bloom in paradise unending, Crimson rose of spring! This refrain came as her ending: “Oh, my dear little thing!”
