Norfolk Virginia Bicentennial Half Dollar 1936 |

EN: A short review of the Norfolk Virginia Bicentennial Half Dollar — a commemorative half dollar issued in 1936 to mark the 200th anniversary of Norfolk becoming a borough and the 100th anniversary of its incorporation as a city. The obverse features Norfolk’s historic city seal, with a sailing ship, plow, and three sheaves of wheat symbolizing maritime trade, agriculture, and regional prosperity. The reverse depicts the Norfolk ceremonial mace, an important civic symbol presented to the city during the colonial era, surrounded by commemorative dates and inscriptions. The highly detailed design by William Marks Simpson and Marjory Emory Simpson is rich in historical symbolism and reflects Virginia’s colonial heritage. With its complex composition and relatively low mintage, the Norfolk Half Dollar remains one of the most distinctive and collectible issues in the classic U.S. commemorative half dollar series Приглашаем вас в Telegram-канал «Заметки нумизмата and Co» - сообщество людей, увлечённых монетами и их историей!
