While peace negotiations in the Second Anglo-Dutch War stalled, Admiral Michiel de Ruyter led 80 Dutch warships and 4,000 troops towards the Thames and the Medway rivers – home of the English fleet. What followed was a raid so audacious that no Englishman was expecting it, and they would pay the price for not being prepared. This is the story of the Raid on the Medway: two decades of Anglo-Dutch rivalry, a King's fatal decision, and the desperate defence of Chatham against overwhelming odds. ------------------------------------- Thank you to our historical consultant, Andrew Lambert, Laughton Professor of Naval History at King's College London. ------------------------------------- Support Epic History TV on Patreon from $2 per month, and get perks like ad-free early access & votes on future topics https://www.patreon.com/EpicHistoryTV Or join the ranks of the Grognards with our YouTube memberships https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvPXiKxH-eH9xq-80vpgmKQ/join 👕 Buy posters, t-shirts, hoodies, mugs & stickers at our merch store: https://www.ehtvmerch.com/ #EpicHistoryTV #EpicHistory #Medway #NavalHistory #Navy #RoyalNavy #BritishHistory #DutchHistory
