The melody was written by Boris Fomin, and the original Russian lyrics were penned by poet Konstantin Podrevskii. The song’s romantic, nostalgic tone made it a beloved folk tune, especially among Russian Gypsies. In 1968, American songwriter Gene Raskin provided English lyrics and reintroduced the piece as "Those Were the Days." The song was recommended by Paul McCartney to singer Mary Hopkin, whose rendition was released by Apple Records. This version quickly became a hit, topping charts in the UK and reaching high positions on the US Billboard charts—earning a place as one of Hopkin’s signature songs. #classicmusic #accordion #accordioncover
