"Cranes" (Russian: «Журавли»: is a famous Soviet and Russian song about soldiers who did not come back alive from battles. The song was composed by Yan Frenkel on translation of poem by Rasul Gamzatov from Dagestan-Avaar, and performed by Mark Bernes. "Cranes" became a symbol of the fallen soldiers of World War II. This time, Mongolian baritone singer BATTUR Tserendondov performed it his special concerto "Italian Classics & Mongolian Trio", Chicago, IL, USA, 2026. THE CRANES Sometimes I think that soldiers Who never returned from those bloodied fields Did not fall into our earth But somehow turned into white cranes To this day, from those distant times They still fly and call out to us Is that not why, so often and so sadly We fall silent, gazing into the sky? A weary flock flies, flies across the sky Flying through the mist at the close of day And within that formation there is a little gap Perhaps that place is meant for me The day will come, and with the flock of cranes I too shall drift through that same bluish haze Calling out to all of you, like a bird All of you whom I left behind on earth Sometimes I think that soldiers Who never returned from those bloodied fields Did not fall into our earth But somehow turned into white cranes
