Two of them are silent and don't make a sound on their own — but they completely change how the surrounding letters are pronounced. The soft sign (Ь) softens the consonant before it. The hard sign (Ъ) is the alphabet's bodyguard: it stands between a consonant and a vowel that starts with a 'y' sound, blocking them from merging.
