Стихи Сергея Есенина в 14 песнях | Sergei Yesenin’s Poems in 14 Songs by Romantic Robot

Sergei Yesenin’s poetry has a particular personal resonance for me. My mother’s parents came from Russia, and while they fled after the 1917 Revolution, the world they had left behind remained deeply important to them throughout their lives. They brought me up surrounded by the Russian language and culture, and I loved every bit of it. One particular song, На Кавказе (In the Caucasus), carried an additional meaning for me: my grandfather, Michail Petrovich Zvjagin, was actually born there, so setting this poem to music and having it sung by Sacha Zvjagin brought things full circle for me in an almost unbelievable way. Other poems in this album touch equally strongly on love, memory, loss, ageing and departure — themes in Yesenin that seem to become more rather than less powerful with time. This album brings together 14 poems in 14 songs, one musical setting of each poem. I hope that, even for listeners who do not speak Russian, the music may convey something of the extraordinary emotional directness that has made Yesenin’s poetry endure for more than a century.
