I got the idea for this song thinking about an old neighbor I had for many years. This was a long time ago. He lived alone, next door to me. Had no friends or family that I knew of. He was the sweetest man. I used to invite him over for holidays and dinners. I knew him for years but never knew anything about him except that he was in sales and a bit lonely. One day I came home from work and walked past his apartment and looked through his screen door and he was lying on the floor. I rushed in, got him up and took him to the hospital. He didn't want to go but he had hit his head when he fell and was bleeding. I went to visit him that evening but by the next day he had gone downhill. Since I wasn't family they wouldn't tell me anything. I kept calling and trying to see him for a week. He was in a coma. He ended up passing away. His apartment was left filled with old boxes of things and all of his personal items. I started cleaning out his apartment in hopes that I could find contacts of friends or family. I found the contact info an old girlfriend and called her. She hadn't seen him in years and didn't have any info on family. I found out he contracted HIV through a blood transfusion at the hospital many years prior looking through files. He had to file bankruptcy because of all of the medical bills over the years. I knew none of this. As I went through his things I kept wondering why he saved certain things. Things that meant something to him but no one else would ever know why. All that was left of him was in that apartment. Once everything was cleaned out there was barely a memory of him. It was such a strange feeling. I never forgot about him. I wrote this song about having to clean out the belongings of someone else and wondering about the meaning of the things they saved. I have many items like that myself. No one will ever know the meaning behind them. Some little memento from some past memory. Why do we hold on to these things. I tried to make a story out of the video. It's so hard making story driven ai content. I really give it to the people out there doing it. Others think it's easy but trying to get consistency in the images is hard. Their faces change, their clothing changes, the room changes. I really don't like doing it. I find it tedious and challenging. I just did the best I could and made this little video for the song in hopes it matched the vibe. I like it. Guess that's all that matters :-) The Smallest Things [verse] I found a sweater with tattered thread Pulled a wooden out box from under the bed Wiped the dust from a familiar frame Looking at a face without a name A worn old coat that's seen its years How did all the memories end up here [Chorus] Maybe we're made from the smallest things A loose white button, a swallow's wing A match struck once in the fading blue Smoke finds the places we never knew Time won't ask to be explained Some things go and some remain [Verse 2] I stack the papers in a heavy pile Tracing the edges of a faded smile Last days of summer hanging in the air I sit alone in a well-worn chair I pack the boxes till the room is bare And leave the memories of an old life there [Chorus] Maybe we're made from the smallest things A loose white button, a swallow's wing A match struck once in the fading blue Smoke finds the places we never knew Time won't ask to be explained Some things go and some remain Lyrics written by me, Kelly Boesch.
