The Return.USSR. Russia.2003.Drama film.Возвращение.СССР.Россия.2003 This film was one of the first films that I suggested to watch to a person dear to me. He had not come into contact with the realities of Russian life before, he had a stereotypical understanding of Russia: nesting dolls, borscht, the beau monde of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Andrei Tarkovsky with his "Mirror", Nureyev and, of course, the great Russian literature and art. He knew a couple of films from the USSR. This film in the early 2000s became a shocking discovery for him of the film industry of the new Russia. I suggest you watch "The Return", my dears. The film is not simple, but it will not leave you indifferent. "The Return" is a 2003 Russian coming-of-age drama directed by Andrei Zvyagintsev, released internationally in 2004. It tells the story of two Russian boys whose father suddenly returns home after a 12-year absence. He takes the boys on a vacation to a remote island on a lake, which becomes a survival test of almost mythical proportions. This is a very harsh movie, very heavy and serious, but just as magnificent! The film was shot in places that never get old. The film was shot in the Leningrad Region: in Zelenogorsk, Vyborg, Priozersk and Sosnovo. Filming also took place on Lake Ladoga, near St. Petersburg. Can you imagine an abandoned island without the slightest connection to the outside world today? Easily. And the city scenes in the delightful Vyborg - even today you can walk in the footsteps of the heroes, sit in the same place where they sat. If you have never seen it, you must definitely watch it! If you have, watch it again. The film has received numerous awards around the world: 2003 — five prizes at the Venice Film Festival: the Golden Lion, the CinemAvvenire Prize for the best first film, the Luigi di Laurentiis Prize – Lion of the Future, the SIGNIS Award, the Sergio Trasatti Award (all — Andrey Zvyagintsev) 2003 — the European Film Academy Award for the European Discovery of the Year (Andrey Zvyagintsev) 2003 — three prizes at the Gijon Film Festival: a special jury prize (Andrey Zvyagintsev), best screenplay (Vladimir Moiseenko, Aleksandr Novotocki), best actor (Vladimir Garin, Ivan Dobronravov, Konstantin Lavronenko) 2003 — the Kingfisher Award for the best debut at the Ljubljana Film Festival (Andrey Zvyagintsev) 2003 — participation in the main competition of the film festival in Locarno 2003 — three Golden Aries awards: best film, best debut (Andrei Zvyagintsev), best cinematography (Mikhail Krichman) 2003 — FIPRESCI Prize at the Thessaloniki Film Festival (Andrei Zvyagintsev) 2003 — three Golden Eagle awards: best feature film (Dmitry Lesnevsky, Andrei Zvyagintsev), best cinematography (Mikhail Krichman), best sound engineer (Andrei Khudyakov). 2004 — Nominated for the Cesar Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Andrei Zvyagintsev) 2004 — Nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film 2004 — Prize for Best Film at the Mexico City Contemporary Film Festival (Andrei Zvyagintsev) 2004 — Two Nika Awards: Best Feature Film (Dmitry Lesnevsky, Andrei Zvyagintsev) and Best Cinematography (Mikhail Krichman) 2004 — Audience Award at the Tromsø Film Festival (Andrei Zvyagintsev) 2004 — FIPRESCI Prize at the Palm Springs Film Festival (Andrei Zvyagintsev) 2005 — Swedish Golden Bug Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Andrei Zvyagintsev) 2005 — Nominated for Danish Bodil Award for Best Non-American Film (Andrei Zvyagintsev) In 2003, the film was selected as Russia's entry for the Oscar, but was not nominated and did not make the shortlist. Genre drama Director Andrei Zvyagintsev Producer Dmitry Lesnevsky Scriptwriters Vladimir Moiseenko, Alexander Novotocky-Vlasov Starring Vladimir Garin, Ivan Dobronravov, Konstantin Lavronenko Cinematographer Mikhail Krichman Composer Andrei Dergachev Production designer Zhanna Pakhomova Film company REN TV Country Russia Year
